| | The Young Israel of Stamford will be celebrating its Annual Dinner on March 23rd, at the Stamford Sheraton. The synagogue will honor Elie and Suzanne Fishman for their years of devotion to the Young Israel, while Bob Abrams will receive the Community Service Award. The evening will focus on the theme, "Who is wise? He who learns from every person."
Elie Fishman is currently serving his second term as synagogue president, having presided over synagogue affairs also from 2003-2005. In the absence of a rabbi this year, his leadership has been especially critical. Elie also teaches in the synagogue's many educational programs, from Shabbat afternoon to the family "beit midrash" on Sunday evenings. In addition to supporting her husband's leadership, Suzanne herself has undertaken numerous volunteer roles over the years, most recently steering the annual calendar. How do they manage it? "It's really just self-interest," Eli explains. "The Young Israel is an extension of our home and such a big part of our lives. Naturally, we want to enhance our home."
However, the Fishman's contributions extend beyond the synagogue itself. Suzanne, an attorney, regularly provides valuable legal assistance to Jewish and other non-profit causes on a pro bono basis. An Associate National Commissioner for the Anti- Defamation League, Suzanne was recently awarded a national prize from the ADL for young leadership. Last year, Suzanne organized and hosted a successful fundraiser for Shalva, an Israeli school for special needs children. Eli served on the board of the Jewish Federation of Stamford from 2005-2006, and has enjoyed teaching Jews of all ages and backgrounds through both the Etgar program (now part of Kulanu), and Tapestry at the JCC. He also provides the "ultimate act of chesed (kindness)," caring for the deceased as a member of the Chevre Kadisha. Dinner co-chair Michal Smart comments, "the Fishmans have devoted themselves so tirelessly to the community, it is a delight to honor them."
Bob Abrams was enthusiastically chosen to receive the Young Israel's award for Community Service. A native of Stamford, Bob's involvement in the local community dates back to his youth. Early in his professional life, Bob decided to make his every day work life have more meaning to him. Bob returned to his alma mater, Bi-Cultural Day School, to serve as its Executive Director for 9 years. While there, he also taught a variety of Jewish subjects, including Jewish history, prayer, Bible and Mishnah. Not content to stay in the office or the classroom, Bob also led the eighth grade trip to Israel.
Bob currently serves as the Managing Director of Jewish Life and Learning at the Stamford JCC, where his presence is felt on a daily basis. Through his work, Bob touches the lives of Jews of all ages, from weekly Shabbat programs in the preschool to a special class for seniors. Bob continues to teach a wide variety of Judaic classes and the Florence Melton "adult mini-school," which he also helps to administrate. Bob strives to have Jews of all walks of life come together, and he loves it. "When you help other people to find meaning and reward in their lives," he explains, "there is no bigger high than that."
Bob and his wife, Margie, are active in many different parts of Stamford's Jewish community. They are cherished members of both Congregation Agudath Sholom and the Young Israel of Stamford. Bob teaches at Young Israel's family beit midrash program, and has taken the night shift at both synagogues on Shavuot. In addition, Bob serves on the Chevre Kadisha, and entertains the community as a member of his band, "the Bagles."
When asked to accept the Community Service Award, Bob reports that he was speechless, "which is highly unusual for me." "It takes all of us to make a community," Bob commented. "We're all in it together."
